When I began my pastoral career on June 15, 1975, I never dreamed I would write a newsletter like this. Jesus calls on us to “be as gentle as doves.” We are implored to refrain from using violence against others. Yet at the same time, when our lives or the lives of others are in peril, we are encouraged to defend and protect ourselves and other innocents. The following verses help us to understand that the Word of God calls on us to protect ourselves and our loved ones:

In Mark 10: 16 Jesus said, “…so be wise as serpents and innocent as
doves.”

In Luke 11: 21 Jesus said, “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his
own mansion his property is safe.”

In Luke 22: 36 Jesus said, “And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

In Psalm 82: 4 we read, “Rescue weak and needy people…”

Proverbs 24: 11 “Rescue captives condemned to death…”

Over the past several years we have seen mass shootings in town squares, at resorts, and at schools. And now places
of worship have been hit. We hope, we think that it will never happen here in Waukee, at Immanuel. But that’s what the
people in Ames thought a few weeks ago. And now two are dead because they were attacked at church.

So, mark July 17, 1:00 - 4:00 pm to attend the “Active Shooter Training” here at Immanuel. This class will be led by
well-trained police and SWAT officers from the Des Moines Police Department. The class will begin with a brief
presentation followed by “hands on training.” We will learn from officers that are trained as combat medics. You will
learn about ways to respond if our church is ever confronted by a gun man. You will learn what to look for and how to
protect yourself and those around you.

Now the chances are we will never need this training, but if we ever do, isn’t it a good idea to be trained and ready? God
wants us to protect and defend ourselves. God wants us to protect others as well. This class is open to all the members
of Immanuel, your friends, your neighbors, fellow school teachers, etc. What we need from you is a commitment that
you will attend so that we have enough trainers and equipment. You can sign up electronically HERE, use the sheet on
the credenza in the gathering area or contact the church office.

Do not say it will never happen here! Do not say I’m too old or too young to attend.
Sign up now: July 17, 1:00 - 4:00pm.
